10,000 Steps ✅
I'm a typical fanatic.
I catch wind of some novel idea and then get carried away with implementation.
My latest obsession has been logging 10,000 steps per day. After Dia's mom walked circles around us at Disney, I bought a walking pad and committed to 300,000 steps in June.
That goal was a hedge. I thought it would be too hard to do 10,000/day. As it turns out, I was right. But I got it done anyway! 😤

My typical day looked like ~4-5,000 steps by the time the kids went to bed. Then I would hop on the treadmill and watch Tyrese Haliburton win games he had no business being in. #Haliban
I learned a few things on this journey (no pun intended).
- Walking and talking is an unlock
I tried walking at my desk for like 6 seconds before I decided it wasn't for me. However, anytime I took a call throughout the day, I hopped on the walking pad and cranked out some steps.
- I am default sedentary
I'm embarrassingly lazy. I remember one day I logged 2,500 steps by 7pm. I had to spend 2 hours on the walking pad that night to make up for it. 😅
- Walking after a meal is a great way to eliminate a food coma
I got into a routine of walking 10 minutes after lunch most days and it made a huge difference in my afternoon productivity. I went from battling the urge to take a nap to actually being able to get stuff done.
- The iOS Health App makes for a terrible pedometer
I strongly considered buying an old-school pedometer and clipping it to my pants because relying on my phone to tell me my stops became a HUGE distraction. I'm sure my phone pick-ups and screen time for June was nuts. I don't even want to look.
- I gained some weight this month
This extra activity gave me an excuse to sprinkle in an extra snack (or three) every day. I proved the age-old adage true. Can't outrun a bad diet. Or in this case, outwalk. Maybe the act of writing this out and publishing it will be enough to exercise some willpower when that late-night snack is calling my name from the pantry.
- Small wins build momentum, but consistency is the real hero
Chasing 10,000 steps daily taught me that hitting a goal feels great, but the real magic happens in showing up every day, even when it’s a slog. There were nights I stared at the walking pad, dreading another hour of marching in place. But stringing together those small efforts—step by step—turned a daunting 300,000-step goal into something achievable. It’s a reminder that big results come from boring, consistent habits, not just bursts of motivation.
- Movement sparks creativity
I noticed my best ideas popped up while I was walking, whether during a call on the walking pad or a quick post-lunch stroll. Something about moving my body got my brain firing differently—problems I’d been stuck on suddenly had solutions, and random blog post ideas (like this one) started taking shape. It’s made me rethink sitting still as my default for “thinking” time and lean into movement as a way to unlock new perspectives.

I’m not chasing a step count forever, but I’m hooked on the clarity and drive it brought me. I'd encourage you to lace up your Nikes and try it for a week. Those steps might take you somewhere unexpected.
